Michigan State 7on7 Passing Camp

The 12th Annual Michigan State 7on7 Passing Camp was held yesterday in East Lansing.  It’s a great event for those of us that can’t wait for football season to begin.  There were over 500 players in attendance from around 25 teams.  Some of the better teams in attendance:  Detroit King, Lake Orion, Brother Rice, OLSM, DeWitt, Oak Park, Grand Blanc and Sterling Hts. Stevenson.  There were also two teams from Raw Talent, a Cleveland area all-star camp run by Glenville’s coach Ted Ginn, Sr.  Read the rest of this entry »

Brother Rice Lacrosse and Baseball

I know this is a football fourm, but congratulations are in order for the Brother Rice Lacrosse and Baseball teams.  There were a number of Rice football players on each team.

After an undefeated season and Championships in the State and Midwest Tournaments, the LAX team got some unprecedented news:

In Inside Lacrosse’s final poll, Brother Rice was ranked #1 in the nation. Kind of exciting for Michigan lacrosse.http://www.insidelacrosse.com/page.cfm?pagerid=65840&cat=67366&hidecontent=yes&id=190854

Congratulations to the football players on Brother Rice LAX: Joey Fontanesi, Danny Henneghan, Jimmy and Peter Plaskey, Michael Hamilton, Andrew Cote, Regan Kennedy, Rich Varos, Alex Bua, Bryan Walker, Pat VanDusen, Ben Hogan, Vinnie Celani

Add to that, the football players on the State Championship baseball team: Andy Lentz, Jimmy Pickens, Alex Charles, Dylan Loch, Charlie Baron, Tommy Barrett, Jason Kelmigian and Matt Conway.

It was quite a spring for Brother Rice football. Good luck next season to the twelve players listed above who are returning.

Top 15 Toughest Schedules

As I’ve mentioned before, when I develop my Top 25 Teams list I put a lot of emphasis on strength of schedule.  I admire teams that make a special effort to schedule the most difficult competition they can find.  Conversely, I feel that too many teams and conferences put too much effort into making sure their teams make the playoffs by scheduling cupcake schedules.  I find that the mega conferences all too often hurt their teams by not scheduling any games outside of their own conferences.  The OAA and MAC conferences are the worst offenders, although the OAA has ventured outside for a couple big games this year.  The MEGA has gotten better in recent years and benefits this year in crossover games by Inkster’s move to the Blue.   The Ottawa-Kent Conference does a great job of scheduling teams from different areas of the state and other states as well.  .  Most of the teams on the top 15 list have scheduled tough non-conference games (many out-of-state or out-state) followed with very competitive conference schedules.  There’s no sure road to the playoffs for the teams on this list.  Read the rest of this entry »

The release of the official 2008 schedules has confirmed what many have known for some time that the CHSL Central is at risk of losing its status as the top football league in the state. Read the rest of this entry »

2008 Big Games

The MHSAA has published the 2008 schedules and I’ve identified a number of big games for each week of the season.  Some of these games involve traditional rivals.  Others are key matchups between probable Top 25 teams.  Others are between top Michigan teams and out-of-state opponents.   I’m also including games between Metro Detroit powers and top out-state teams.  The list of big games will be updated as the year unfolds and 2008 records are known.  Read the rest of this entry »
